Our September meeting will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 5 on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana in the Forum 3 Lecture Hall. For a map of the USI campus click here: http://www.usi.edu/visit/map/.
Our speaker will be Professor Bogdan Dragnea from the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. The title of his talk is "Nanoparticle-Templated Assembly of Virus-Like Particles." An abstract is given below.
Hope to see you there!
Abstract: The question of thermodynamic driving forces responsible for the self-assembly and stability of virus capsids will be approached using methods and models borrowed from materials science. In this presentation, nanotechnology and virology concepts combine to provide a general platform for exploring physical phenomena related to virus thermodynamics, which may be important for understanding virus life stages in ways that complement traditional molecular biology approaches. Besides insights on fundamental aspects, the findings may prove important for biotechnology applications such as antiviral drug design or directed therapeutic delivery utilizing virus capsids as responsive, chemically addressable containers.
