Dr. Kate Grassmyer, "Glycopeptide Analysis of Human Sera and Brain Tissue: Research and Collaboration in a Proteomics Core Facility"

Dr. Grassmyer is a Research Associate at the Indiana University Laboratory for Biological Mass Spectrometry. She will discuss her research into optimizing the identification of post-translational modification from protein digests, with an emphasis on glycosylation. Glycosylation, the addition of a polysaccharide to a protein, is implicated in a variety of biological processes and disease states. (According to Thermo-Fisher, protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) increase the functional diversity of the proteome by the covalent addition of functional groups or proteins, proteolytic cleavage of regulatory subunits, or degradation of entire proteins. These modifications influence almost all aspects of normal cell biology and pathogenesis, so identifying and understanding PTMs is critical in the study of cell biology and disease treatment and prevention.)
